Saturday 8th June

En route from Dubai to Copenhagen. The fight from Sydney to Dubai is a loooong flight. 14 hours. But despite the length it was a relatively relaxing flight. A few good movies, couple glasses of wine, couple of sleeping pills and the time went realatively quickly.

The A380 transport a hugh number of people, you don't realise it until you are all waiting to get through security etc, but the terimnal is pretty efficient.

Dubai airport is a hugh bustling affair. And we were only in the Emirates terminal!

Greg just finished his breakfast- arabic messe - not sure what all the food was, but very nice.

Arrival in Copenhagen very smooth, train to hotel.

Afternoon spent wanding around Nyhavn which is a very trendy dock and cafe area. Saturday afternoon was really bustling hive of activity.

Some really beautiful buildings etc.

Back to hotel for light buffet dinner and bed!

Sunday 9th June - Copenhagen

Today the exploring Copenhagen started with great gusto. Tour intinerary director Phil, made sure we were up early to have breakfast and to start ticking off the list of attractions.

First point of call was a liesurely ride on a canal tour. This was very interesting and gave a good overview of some of Copenhagens major tourist spots.

Following the canal tour we went into Christistiansborg Palace- an incredibly beautiful palace, with a really difficult past -burnt down many times and rebuilt.

We then went across the river to Christianhavn. Probably the highlight was All Souls Church. A climb to the top of the steeple gave a great view over Copenhagen.

A visit to Christiania, the free city area- the area is photograhy free ie you can't take photos- probably because of the illiciet drugs on sale. An interesting place.

We called into see Princess Mary for scones and tea, but our invitation must have gone missing in the mail and we weren't allowed in.

Monday 10th

What a busy day! We are cramming so much into each day that we we come back to the hotel we just crash. Fortunately we are all sleeping soundly and waking up each morning raring to go.

Phil is setting a cracking pace. So far we have chalked up over 30 klms walking in the past two days. No wonder our legs are in need of a rest each night.

Today we caught an interurban train and went upto Kronborg Castle in Helsingor, about 40 minutes north of Copenhagen. This castle is probably most famous as being the setting of Shakespeare's play Hamlet. It was a pretty interesting place. This is the narrowest strip of water between Denmark and Sweden. It is pretty busy with ferries etc, but in past days, the King levied a toll on ships passing through the area.

After a nice linch in little cafe in Helsingor, we caught another train to Hillerod to visit Federiksborg Castle. This cast sits on the shore of alovely lilttle lake, with magnificent gardens.

This castle is in very good condition and full of interesting historical items. The magnificance of the painted and carved ceilings is amazing.

Then back on the trains and stopping back to Copenhagen for a visit to the Rundetaarn or "The round tower" which was Copenhagens first observatory

after stopping at Nyhavn for a quick afternoon tea, it was back to the hotel for a relaxing dinner and bed.

Tuesday 11th June - Copenhagen

The Copenhagen adventure continues.

Today we caught a train to Roskilde. We went primarily to see the Viking museum and the Cathedral, but it was such an interesting place.

The viking museum was established after they discovered 5 ships which had been scuttled in the harbour channel.

The salvage of these shipsw has greatly increased the knowledge of the vikings. They have also established a ship yard at the museum where they are building replicas of viking ships using traditional. Materials and tools.LLK

After the viking museum, we walked up the hill to the Cathederal. In the Roskilde cathederal, there are the remains of 20 kings and 17 queens, as well as a number of princes, etc.

An absolutely beautiful church, and not quite as i expected.

Then back to Copenhagen, where we visited the National museum. This museum is full of relics dating back many years.

Then visited the muesum of Hans Christianian
Andersen and then the Tivoli gardes.

Hopefully I will get to post more info and photos tomorrow morning.

Wednesday 12th.

Our last morning in beautiful Copenhagen before boarding the cruise ship this afternoon.

No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without a vist to the Little Mermaid. In itself, the little mermaid is just another sculpture, but of course it is historical and well known, synonomous with Copenhagen. And lots of other people had the same idea to visit.

A beautiful walk though from our hotel, along the waterfront and then back through some gardens etc.

We may not be as upto date in blogs whilst we are on the boat, but keep checking and we will update when we can.
